Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on the 9th of August, 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and the cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. Her mother and she started singing professionally in the church of New Hope Baptist, Newark when Whitney was only 15 years old. They sang backing vocals for Chaka Kans' hit song from 1978 Im Every Woman. In 1981, she was a model, appearing on the Seventeen album cover. She also provided back vocals for Lou Rawls and Jermaine. In 1983 in 1983, Material, the New York City funk-rock band Material employed her as the band's main vocalist. The band's quality is what attracted her to the major label Arista. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut album for a brand new artist in 1985. Many of the songs on her album became hits, such as The Greatest Love of All and Saving All My Love. Album sold in US 3,000,000 copies before it reached 25 million world-wide. It brought her first of her 6 Grammys. The album Whitney, released in 1987 and featuring the smash songs What Do Broken Hearts go? and I Wanna Dance With Somebody, built upon her previous success. However it was The Bodyguard (1996) that established her as one of music's best sellers. The film itself as well as her performance in it were not highly reviewed, the soundtrack album as well as her version of Dolly Parton song I Will Always Love You was the top of the album and single charts for several months, and she sold over 44 million copies all over the globe.
